AT&T and SCAN to Partner for Allies in Prevention and April’s Child Abuse Prevention Month

April 23, 2021

Grant from AT&T Will Support SCAN’s Work Empowering Changemakers in Northern Virginia to Drive Systematic Change

SCAN of Northern Virginia today announced it has received a $10,000 grant from AT&T that will expand SCAN’s Allies in Prevention Coalition and support its work this April, during Child Abuse Prevention Month. As SCAN’s Allies in Prevention Sponsor, AT&T is providing critical funding to engage and support child-serving professionals across Northern Virginia.

“The Allies in Prevention Coalition is at a pivotal point this year,” said Leah Fraley, SCAN’s Executive Director. “As the largest network of child and family welfare advocates in Northern Virginia, we are reimagining how to best activate our members to drive change in the region.

AT&T’s support will help SCAN not only expand Allies in Prevention impact and membership, but will also provide meaningful resources, training, and shared support to better protect countless children.

For more than 30 years, SCAN of Northern Virginia has worked to prevent child neglect and abuse. The past year has been especially difficult for many children and families, yet SCAN has risen to the challenge to serve those in need. We’re happy to help them meet their mission” said Garrett McGuire, Regional Director for External & Legislative Affairs at AT&T.

SCAN and AT&T are inviting community members to honor Child Abuse Prevention Month by attending the virtual Allies in Prevention Community Conversation on April 30 at 1pm EDT. The event will bring child welfare professionals together to recommit to building a safer community for our most vulnerable children.

The Allies in Prevention Community Conversation will feature survivor and critically acclaimed author, Lacy Crawford, as well as a diverse panel of Northern Virginia’s child protection leaders. Registration is free and participants will be celebrated with post-event giveaways.

About SCAN

SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) of Northern Virginia is the only region-wide organization focused on preventing child abuse and neglect. We believe every child deserves a safe, stable, nurturing home. Keeping children safe and helping them thrive requires a continuum of prevention programs that engage families, professionals, and community members. With a core focus on the wellbeing of every child — and a deep understanding of the complexity of child development, abuse, and trauma — we work to empower the four groups surrounding a child:

  • Families, including parents and other caregivers
  • Advocates for children, especially for those already in the court system
  • Child welfare professionals, such as CPS workers and educators
  • Community members

We believe every one of these groups is on the front lines of prevention, and SCAN’s role is to engage and empower these adults to take an active role in the protection of children.
