A Playhouse Fundraiser

Playhouses are a special place for kids to just be kids. This April, join Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia as we recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month and empower our community to prevent abuse with Alexandria’s Playhouse Fundraiser!

A $10 donation secures your raffle ticket to win a unique piece of Alexandria’s history that your children will love to explore for years to come. All proceeds support child abuse prevention work in your backyard and beyond.

America’s skinniest house just got smaller

At just over 7ft wide, Alexandria’s Spite House has been a local and national destination since the 1800s. The local lore can vary depending on who’s telling the story—the house was either built to deter loitering or resolve a dispute with a neighbor. Either way, what was built out of spite has become a landmark that brings people together.

That community and resilience is what drives us at SCAN.

Beautiful things can come out of difficult times. The children we serve show us that, the survivors that lead us show us that, and this playhouse is a symbol of that.

Child abuse is a reality few talk about, but it’s incredibly common. Every 10 seconds, a report of child abuse is made in the United States, and 1 in 7 children face abuse or neglect. For 35 years, SCAN has been a voice for abused and neglected children, a safe place for families to get help, and a leader in child abuse prevention.

This year, in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, we’re spreading the joy of childhood and celebrating our community in Northern Virginia. Join us by making a donation and entering to win a special homage to what makes Alexandria a beautiful place to live.

*The winner of this Tiny House with Big Heart will be pulled on April 24, 2024, as a part of SCAN’s Spring2ACTion campaign celebrating Alexandria’s Day of Giving.

Our work

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia is the only region-wide organization focused solely on preventing child abuse and neglect across Northern Virginia.

Giving children removed from their homes a voice in the court system.

Supporting parents and families when they need it most.

Creating safe spaces that prioritize children’s rights.

Making child abuse prevention a priority.

Our work

Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) of Northern Virginia is the only region-wide organization focused solely on preventing child abuse and neglect across Northern Virginia.

CHILD ADVOCACY

A voice for children in the court system.

The Alexandria/Arlington Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program provides trained volunteers appointed by the court to serve as a direct voice for children in the juvenile court system. The CASA Program has helped hundreds of children who have been abused or neglected have a voice within the court system.

INSTITUTIONAL ABUSE

Creating safe spaces for children.

By partnering with organizations that families already trust (schools, daycares, faith communities, etc.), we’re able to implement violence prevention programming that creates a standard of care for all children within a community, keeping them safe from abuse wherever they are.

FAMILY SUPPORT

We are here for families.

We engage families, caregivers, and children who are marginalized or otherwise vulnerable and, therefore, more susceptible to abuse and violence in the home. SCAN provides evidence-based programming, informative workshops, and relationship-building events to bring families together to celebrate their strengths and address challenges in a safe, supportive environment.

AWARENESS

Making child abuse prevention a priority.

Our goal is to mobilize all adults to take responsibility for safeguarding children. Through a variety of media, community events, and other awareness efforts in all of Northern Virginia, we, as subject matter experts, educate and engage the community in a conversation about our collective responsibility to keep children safe from violence.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, SCAN of Northern Virginia (“SCAN”) officers, board members, employees, and any immediate family members thereof, are expressly prohibited from winning the raffle . Subject to all applicable federal and state and local laws and regulations.

To enter, visit https://scanva.org/donate/playhouse/ and follow the online instructions. Each $10 donation to SCAN via the above-referenced website will result in an opportunity to win the playhouse. A $100 donation will result in ten opportunities to win the playhouse. A $250 donation will result in twenty-five opportunities to win the playhouse. There is no limit as to how many donations may be made. Donations will generate a random identification number, which will identify the individual who made the donation. These identification numbers will then be used to identify the winner during the random electronic drawing.

Online entries must be received between 8:00 AM Eastern Time (“ET”) on March 2, 2024, and 6:00 PM ET on April 24, 2024. Online entries are deemed to be made by the authorized account holder of the contact information and e-mail address submitted at time of entry. Entry data that has been tampered, or appears to have been tampered with, will be disqualified.

You have not yet won. The event ends April 24, 2024 at 6:00 pm EST. The opportunity to be selected as a winner of the playhouse depends on the total number of eligible entries received.  SCAN is not responsible for any technical difficulties in accessing the website or making donations.

A random electronic drawing will be conducted on April 24, 2024 at 6:30 pm EST, from all eligible entries (see Eligibility clause) received by a representative of SCAN whose decisions are final and binding in all respects. Potential winners will be notified via email and telephone within one (1) day after the drawing.

If a potential winner fails to respond within two (2) days of notification, that potential winner will be disqualified and an alternate winner will be determined. In order to receive the playhouse, potential winners may be required to provide documentation that SCAN reasonably requires for prize fulfillment, such as, but not limited to, providing proof of identity. If this does not occur, the potential winner will be disqualified, and an alternate winner will be determined.

Pending any unforeseen changes, delivery of the playhouse to the winner will occur at a mutually agreed upon time during or around the first week of May 2024. SCAN will coordinate delivery of the playhouse to the winner within the five counties that SCAN serves (Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun County). In the event that the winner lives outside of those counties, the winner agrees and is responsible for receipt of the playhouse and coordinating transportation to its destination.

Winner agrees that SCAN is not responsible or liable for any damage to the playhouses that occurs during the entry period, transit or delivery. Winner also agrees that SCAN is not responsible for any damage incurred while delivering the playhouse to a driveway, street, or other hard surface including, but not limited to, any damage to asphalt, pavement, lawn, grass, bushes, plants, irrigation, landscaping, or hardscaping.
