December 18, 2023

2023 was an incredible year for child abuse prevention.

Before we kick off 2024, we want to look back, share some of our highlights from this year,
and celebrate the extraordinary things our supporters have allowed us to do…

We hosted our first Family Programs Strengthening Families facilitator training and welcomed eight new parent facilitators to our community.

February 2023 | Family Programs in Fairfax and Falls Church

We offered two seven-week workshops for parents this Spring—one in Falls Church and one in Fairfax. These courses go beyond workshops. Parents and youth spend weeks connecting with one another, their peers, and our talented facilitators. By the end of the class, we are proud to say parents don’t just have new tools in their parenting toolbox, but a community to turn to forever.

March 2023 | Greensboro Park Fundraiser

Through one of our Court Appointed Special Advocates, we were able to partner with an office building in Tysons and raise $3,000+ for Child Abuse Prevention Month! April 2023 | Child Abuse Prevention Month

Each April, we turn Northern Virginia blue to spread awareness, build resiliency, and stand up for children facing abuse and neglect. This year we were thrilled to share SCAN’s work on a segment with DC News Now that reached over 1,000,000 people.

May 2023 | Loudoun TICN Resilience Awards

We hosted the first annual Resilience Awards through the Loudoun Country Trauma-Informed Care Network (TICN). Over 100 Loudoun TICN members from 45 organizations were invited to nominate colleagues going above and beyond for the community. Rather than a physical award or traditional ceremony, the eight recipients received a special wellbeing experience connecting horses and humans to facilitate growth, healing, and hope.

June 2023 | Pride in Alexandria

LGBTQ+ youth face violence, suicide, homelessness, and many other traumas at distressingly higher rates. This year we celebrated Pride in both Alexandria and Loudoun to stand with LGBTQ+ youth and share words of kindness.

July 2023 | CASA spotlight on DC News Now

We’ve had a profound need for Spanish-speaking advocates this year in our CASA program. When our friends at DC News Now heard of our gap in volunteers, they jumped in to help spread the word. We were able to not only spotlight the good our program is doing for foster youth in Alexandria and Arlington but also reach thousands with a call for Spanish-speaking volunteers.

August 2023 | Child Trafficking Multi-Disciplinary Team Training in Fairfax

When we began seeing an increase in trafficking and child exploitation across Northern Virginia, we knew our healthcare providers, educators, law enforcement, and human service partners deserved support from the best. Our hands-on, full-day workshop in Fairfax featured Dr. Jordan Greenbaum, an international subject matter expert on child sex trafficking and exploitation. Over 65 professionals from every county joined us to learn best practices for building trust with victims, and this is just the beginning. We’re continuing to work closely with these partners and Dr. Greenbaum to build comprehensive anti-trafficking teams throughout NOVA.

October 2023 | Annual Bocce fundraiser with Alexandria Women’s Group

This fall’s Boccee Tournament was one to remember. SCAN partnered with Alexandria Women’s Group and Old Dominion Bocce for a day of fun, food, drinks, music & bocce! All proceeds went directly to SCAN and our work with vulnerable youth & families.

November 2023 | 35th Annual Toast to Hope

More than 240 guests joined us at Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria on November 11 to celebrate 35 years of progress in child abuse prevention. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors and supporters, more than $252,000 was raised to support SCAN and help children dream again. Now we toast to 35 more years!

December 2023 | SCAN HQ mural unveiling

When we moved into our new office, we wanted to create a wellness space for our team to remind us why we do this work. What local artist and friend of SCAN, Mike Pacheco, created for our team left us speechless. Mike generously donated his time and talents to transform our walls into canvases. Thank you, Mike, for capturing the essence of childhood and bringing joy to our space!
